Most popular breeds of horses that are considered bets for racing purposes are basically three. These horses are thoroughbred horses, standard bred horses and quarter horses. All these breeds have their specific traits making them ideal for different races. Let us study each one of them deeply.

First of all, there comes the quarter horses. These horses get their name from the fact that this breed is best for running quarter mile races. They are much of a sprinter and run flat racing usually around 600 yards or less. So if you are planning to invest in smaller races, quarter horse is your bet. These horse come out of the gate and run to the finish line in no time. There is no strategy or game here, just a flat out race between the horses.

Thoroughbred horses, on the other hand, are known for running long distances which varies from horse to horse. Usually these horses can run for 5 to 12 furlongs. There is some strategy here as not every thoroughbred horse can make you run the race as some horses are front runners while some prefer to run in the back of a pack. It is also expensive to keep a thoroughbred horse as it may cost you around $60,000 a year.

Standard bred horses are another American breed of horses which have the ability to trot and pace according to which these horses may gallop. The least distance such horses can run is 1 mile. Standard bred horses and quarter horses easily run on dirt whereas the thoroughbred horses can easily run on synthetic surfaces as well as dirt and turf.
